Viscosity provides in-depth comprehesive database health checks for customers who need assurance that their database(s) are performing optimally and adhering to industry best practices. Customers also need to establish a baseline to compare against future deployments and upgrades.  With Viscosity, you can have confidence that your databases are configured to run Oracle workloads efficiently as possible. We will perform the following checks against the defined servers and databases:

 

  1. Perform discovery on servers and database
    1. Assess hardware configuration: Host, Network, and Storage
    2. For engineered systems, perform ODA Check or Exadata Check
    3. Perform Cluster Health Checks for RAC environments
  2. Assess Operating System, ASM or Filesystem, and Database configuration
    1. Execute scripts to gather key metrics
    2. Execute health check scripts
    3. Review OS kernel parameters
  3. Evaluate the overall health of the systems from performance and high availability perspective
    1. Identify issues/gaps and classify each as Major, Minor, or Informational
    2. Rank the priority of each issue/gap, define the benefit, and give an estimate on effort and time to resolve each open item
  4. Evaluate operational activities; e.g., backup efficiency, monitoring, and management of the systems
    1. Review initialization parameters
    2. Review backup strategy
      1. Review recovery architecture
      2. Review DR strategy relative to RPO and RTO
    3. Review archive retention strategy[1]
    4. Review AWR reports for high level performance considerations
    5. Review scalability requirements
  5. Review Schemas [1]
    1. Assess Primary Key / Foreign Key discrepancies
    2. Review SQL Queries to identify objects of contention
    3. Review indexes
    4. Review sequences
    5. Review potential partitioning
  6. Performance Review [1]
    1. Review AWRs and Identify top 5 SQL for tuning
      1. Make recommendations for SQL
    2. Review AWRs for top wait events
    3. Review ASH reports
    4. Review current database IOPs, throughput and performance metrics
  7. Review Security[2]
  8. Review Patches on the databases [2]
  9. Document Assessment findings, industry best practices, and outline strategy to implement
    1. A summary presentation that includes the key findings and recommendations of the database workload
    2. Provide a finding report complete with discovered gaps and remediation recommendations if any needed. [2]

We want to limit the expenses incurred for travel.  We can be on-site to collect information about the Oracle ecosystem.  Bulk of the analytics and documentation will be conducted at Viscosity’s office.  Viscosity can be on-site to deliver the report of findings or can present the material back over WebEx.
